Australian expertise and technologies in Clean Development Mechanism [CDM] and low emission projects on offer for India

Australian Carbon Cluster Mission to India seeks alliances & partnerships in India

Australian expertise, technologies and solutions in clean development mechanism [CDM] and low emission projects are on offer for India. 10 Australian organisations are participating at the Australian pavilion in the Methane to Markets Partnership Expo and Conference held between 2 – 5 March 2010 at the Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi.

This is the first Methane to Markets (M2M) event in India, following on from the inaugural program in Beijing, China in 2007 which included representation from 34 countries.

Organised by the Australian Trade Commission, the Australian Government’s international trade and investment promotion agency, Australian presence at the exhibition is the Australian Trade Commission’s first ever trade initiative in CDM and low emission projects in India. Australian representation at the exhibition is supported by Australian Government agencies - Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism [DRET]; Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry [DAFF]; and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation [CSIRO] who have specialist expertise in methane capture and management. Representatives of these agencies will be presenting at the conference.

Australian Expertise in CDM & Low Emission

With sustainable development as the priority, Australia is investing in the development and practical application of low carbon technologies and renewable energy. In line with this, Australia has recently implemented a resolution to ensure 20 per cent of the country’s electricity is derived from renewable sources by 2020. Also, as part of its Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), Australia expects to meet its expanded emissions reduction target of as much as 25% of 2000 levels by 2020.

Australia has significant expertise in CDM and low emission technologies. From the measurement and monitoring of emissions to environmental feasibility studies, project design, development and documentation, validation, verification and auditing services, Australian organisations have the capability to deliver services across the entire carbon value chain. Australian financial services organisations have extensive experience trading in the commodity and electricity markets. Australia`s competitive energy markets have been the key drivers of development of Australia’s expertise in CDM and low emission.

Australian Carbon Cluster program

As emerging nations implement policies to address climate change challenges, Australia has embarked on a mission to provide its expertise & solutions in CDM and low emissions to developing nations complementing Australia’ broader expertise in climate change & clean energy.

The Australian Trade Commission and its allies have developed the Australian Carbon Cluster program, which is a value chain of project-ready Australian companies that can initiate, develop and complete CDM and other low emission projects in international markets. This carbon cluster brings together experienced suppliers and service providers who will partner on carbon projects through their specialist technologies and capabilities linking individual components such as finance, technology, project design, risk analysis, carbon trading, and inventory management into a broader offering creates a value chain.

In India, the scope for CO2 savings measures in the energy sector is considerable and with over US$200 billion required in new investment in energy projects over the next 10 years, the Indian market holds significant potential.

According to Peter Linford, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner – South Asia, Australian Trade Commission, “The Australian Government Department of Resources Energy and Tourism (DRET) is working with Australia’s research community and industry to support the further development and commercial deployment of technologies that are needed in the energy sector to address climate change.  Australia has made substantial progress in developing and implementing greenhouse abatement solutions that also enhance the competitiveness and reliability of the energy sector.  The lessons learnt, the expertise gained and the technologies tried in Australia have direct application in India.  DRET’s participation in the M2M Expo in New Delhi is part of the cooperative work it is doing with India to facilitate the sharing of technology and expertise between our two countries”.

“Like Australia, India has plans to source 20 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from renewable energy by 2020. Both our countries are also pursuing methane capture-and-use projects in agriculture, coal mines, landfills, and the oil and gas sectors. Australia has the proven technical expertise and a range of innovative technologies and solutions to assist

India in driving forward development in these sectors. Australian expertise in clean energy, CDM and low emissions are much sought after internationally and the Australian Trade Commission would like to offer Australian expertise in clean energy, CDM and low emission for India. The participation in the M2M partnership expo is part of the Australian Government initiative to expand Australia`s trade and investment presence and profile in CDM and low emission in global markets”, said Peter Linford.

Australian Participation at the Methane to Markets Partnership Expo

The Methane to Markets Partnership Expo is the premier international forum for promoting methane recovery and use project opportunities and technologies. The Australian participation at the exhibition presents a cross section of capability across carbon monitoring; carbon trading; CDM & emission reduction projects consulting & implementation; waste-to-energy technologies; water; waste recycling & waste management systems and renewable energy

Australian companies participating at the exhibition include;

- Carbon Flow - Carbonflow develops and markets software for carbon reduction market participants. Carbonflow provides software products and services to manage and monitor carbon reduction projects
