A Seminar on "Doing Business with Australia" was held in Puducherry on Thursday, 23 April 2009, organised by the Australian Trade Commission in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry [CII].

The seminar is a part of the Australian Trade Commission’s Utsav Australia (Celebrate Australia) programme – an Australian Government initiative to accelerate Australia’s commercial engagement with India and raise awareness of Australian industry capability amongst the Indian business community.

The seminar showcased the potential business & trade opportunities with Australia for businesses in Puducherry in sourcing Australian technology, products and services; investing in Australia and potential joint venture partnership and investments.

The seminar specifically highlighted Australian expertise in infrastructure, building & construction, healthcare, Information Technology, education and training, retail, food and beverage and the value-add of Australian companies to businesses in Puducherry.

Speaking at the seminar, Aminur Rahman, Australian Consul General for South India and Trade Commissioner, said “Puducherry, hitherto known for its rich history and French connection, is emerging as a very significant business destination. Australia can provide value-added competitive solutions and expertise both in traditional and emerging sectors for businesses in Puducherry. The developments in Puducherry present itself as an important market and business destination for Australian companies. We are already starting to see keen interest from Australian companies in exploring the potential that Puducherry has to offer and have several Australian companies doing business in Puducherry”.

“Sectors of potential Australian involvement in Puducherry would include, hospitality, education, Infrastructure, building & construction sectors where Australia has a demonstrated capability. We understand that Puducherry has a strategy to increase the number of tourists coming to the territory and that there are plans to either increase and/or construct facilities to cater for this. In this sector, Australia is very well placed to assist businesses in Puducherry in the areas of design & technology for theme parks, aquariums, hotels, golf course, etc” said Aminur Rahman.

According to Mr T Rajarajan, Chairman, CII – Puducherry State Council, "The Confederation of Indian Industry is happy to partner with the Australian Trade Commission to organise this Seminar.  We look forward to working closely with Australia in realising the potential that exists for two way trade and investments and strategic partnerships for the benefit of both. This seminar is a very important step to opening up potential areas of cooperation between Puducherry and Australia”.
