As part of its strategy to showcase Australian expertise in sports management & sports education in India, The Australian Trade Commission recently coordinated the participation of Prof David Shilbury, leading sports management thought leader and researcher at Deakin University, as keynote speaker at The India International Sports Summit - India’s annual Sports industry conference.

Prof Shilbury’s visit to India involved a broad programme put together by The Australian Trade Commission to promote Australia’s and specifically Deakin University’s expertise in sports management as well as sports related education & training.  Around 15 sessions involving guest lectures in Universities & educational institutions, sporting & industry bodies and media briefings were organised in Mumbai, Pune & New Delhi.

Prof Shilbury’s views & opinion on the role of sports governance in the development & management of sports received positive resonance from sports bodies, sporting industry & professionals and media.

Key outcomes of the visit were enhanced profile for quality of teaching staff at Australian Universities among education institutions, industry and media in India. Specifically for Deakin University, Prof. Shilbury’s visit answered the queries of students exploring sports management as a new age career; presented Deakin’s expertise to offer dual degrees in partnership with Indian institutions, including research collaborations & sports management workshops for industry; explored Study tours for students to Australia focused around sports management. Deakin has also been invited to be a knowledge partner in the setting up of an Indian Sports university.
