Aerospace and Aviation Overview

Up up and away

The Australian aerospace industry is a significant segment of the Australian manufacturing sector. Australia also has international capability in pilot training, airport design and fit out as well as associated software and systems.

The Australian aerospace industry is a competitive and technically sophisticated niche supplier to both domestic and overseas markets across a wide range of aerospace activities including:

• aerostructure component manufacture
• systems engineering and avionics
• manufacture of light aircraft for training, agricultural and recreation uses
• repair, maintenance and overhaul services for domestic, overseas airlines and military including through life support
• pilot and engineering training
• development of airport management products and services
• composites
• tooling
• military aircraft
• light aircraft constitute
• unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
• software and niche products

Manufacturing components

Large scale manufacturing of components and engine servicing and overhaul activities are prevalent; and these activities constitute nearly two thirds of industry revenue.

Australia also has capability in the supply of speciality alloys and materials, parts, engineering and manufacturing services, and high quality precision tooling and equipment.

Research

Research agencies supporting the sector include the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures (CRC-ACS), the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), the Sir Lawrence Wackett Centre for Aerospace Design Technology, the Manufacturing Science and Technology division of CSIRO, and researchers at the universities of Sydney, NSW, Monash, RMIT, Queensland.

Airports Infrastructure

Australia is a leading supplier of airport infrastructure to the world. Australia has developed world-class expertise through the development and adoption of airport solutions and supporting engineering capabilities and technologies for a unique geography and diverse local conditions.

Australian engineers and operational personnel, working both in Australia and forums such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), have played a significant part in the development of airport design standards, recommended practices and guidance material for use throughout the civil aviation world. This has led to Australia developing a strong capability in all aspects of airport design, including such elements as the dimensions and configuration of runways and other pavements, approach and other flight clearance surfaces, airport lighting and surface marking and airport building design, fit out, systems and management services such as security and passenger handling.

A major study of world airports assessed the best airports based on employee productivity, aeronautical developments, staff and operating costs, with all five of Australia’s international airports rated in the top seven of the world.

Australian companies and organisations from the airports industry can provide a complete range of quality airport services, including consulting, civil works, supply and installation of systems and equipment, and management and operational support.

Australian companies can also provide a total solution for a wide scope of airport developments or expansion projects. Total packages can be developed to include construction and management and transfer of technology with specific training packages as part of overall project delivery.
