Wine industry capability overview

Australian wines are in demand around the world because of their quality, price, consistency and reliability. With a good climate, each of Australia’s wine-growing regions produces wine grapes with distinctive characteristics, reflecting the richness and diversity of the land.

 

The wine industry undertakes extensive research and development and embraces new and innovative technology. Australian wine producers are constantly exploring and developing wine styles that emphasise complexity and depth of flavour and that respond to changing customer preferences.

 

Premium quality and branded wines

 

Australia is a leading producer and exporter of premium quality and branded table wines. The main varieties of wine grapes currently being produced in Australia are:

 

 

• Red wine grapes: shiraz, cabernet sauvignon,  merlot, pinot noir
• White wine grapes: chardonnay, semillon, colombard, riesling, sauvignon blanc
 

 

The Australian wine industry has established state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities for processing, bottling, storage, labelling and packaging.

 

Area under vine

 

To meet the increasing demand for Australian wine, the area under vine has increased to over 157,000 hectares. Over 1798 wineries process Australian wine grapes drawn from 67 regions nationwide.

 

Wine technology

 

Technology plays a key role in the development of new grape varieties, plantings and irrigation, quality assurance and traceability systems.

 

Australia has technical capacity across the wine production supply chain including:

 

 

• viticulture services: vineyard establishment, input management, canopy management,
• technologies to improve health of grapevine root stocks and grape yield,
energy efficient air conditioning-systems and insulation products
irrigation and waste water management
vineyard and winery equipment
winery design
oenology services: wine making, wine consultancy services, wine education

 

 

Innovation in wine

 

Research and development

 

The Australian wine industry invests in research and development to drive innovation to improve product quality and ultimately, enhance consumer experience.

 

Australian expertise in research has led to improved management of the fermentation process, identifying and managing the influence of grape, microbial, oak and cork derived flavoured compounds; and understanding the effects of oxygen, bottle closures and other packaging materials on wine quality.

 

Wine in a can

 

Australian company, Barokes Wine are the inventors and the innovative and patented wine in a can (Vinsafe™) packaging system which enables premium quality wine to be canned with stability and longevity.

 

Barokes wine in a can is a unique Australian invention with patents granted and pending in over 100 counties. Wine in a can (Vinsafe™) is a unique Australian invention that is produced in Australia and exported to a number of international markets.
